Iceland - introduction

On the edge of Europe, Iceland is small, fascinating, beautiful and prosperous country. With a population of around 300,000 it is the smallest Nordic country, but has a landscape which has enticed many to visit its icy shores. It sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which means that it has been host to much volcanic activity which has thus shaped its landscape into the dramatic and breathtaking one we see today. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík and it is a wonderful place to start your Iceland experience from. The country is ranked number one in the world by the United Nations in terms of living standards and whilst it is true that because of the high living standards visiting Iceland can be expensive, if you are planning a trip out into the wilderness then a tent and some very warm clothes are all you will need.
