For an island with fishing at the backbone of its economy, it is unsurprising that many of the dishes are based around fish. But there is also the widespread consumption of lamb and dairy products. The national dish, which is not eaten very often these days, is Þorramatu. Other traditional delicacies you might find include single sheep heads, cured shark, cured ram scrota, skyr and black pudding. Of course in these modern times the normal Icelander eats a variety of foods from around the world and one can find many different restaurants offering international cuisine.
